Key Turkish opposition set to run again for Istanbul mayor in local elections

On Tuesday, Ekrem Imamoglu, the Mayor of Istanbul, a critical figure and potential future Turkey’s leader of political opposition, is set to run again for Istanbul mayor in local elections set for March.

Imamoglu told reporters that who wins in Istanbul also wins in Turkey, as I have said before. Istanbul’s victory would take one to very significant spots in national politics.

The Mayor of Istanbul was not selected as the leader of the opposition in the May national elections but is noticed as

Imamoglu was not picked as the opposition leader in May national elections but is seen as one of its expectations to defeat Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the years ahead.

Since Erdogan beat opposition candidate, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, on May 28, Imamoglu called for a complete change in the opposition.

Imamoglu is seen as a potential successor by some analysts.
