On Sunday, Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa voiced support BRICS group’s expansion of arising market strengths, which will gather for its annual summit in Johannesburg this week.
Ramaphosa said in an address to the nation that an extended BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — will describe various groups of countries that share a joint aim to have a more balanced world order.
Next week’s summit will be attended by Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and 30 other African heads of state, as well as others from the Global South.
South African president said that BRICS leaders are due to carry three days of discussions starting August 22, with a potential growth high on the agenda.
He added that more than 20 countries have formally applied to join.
China and South Africa should push for growing nations to have more power in global matters, Chinese President Xi Jinping said.
However, India wants the procedure to be gradual and is concerned the group would become a voice for Beijing.
Ramaphosa restated that South African foreign policy will be driven by its national interest and that it prefers a negotiated compromise to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other disputes.
