In a tragic turn of events, an airstrike carried out by Russian forces has resulted in the loss of multiple lives in two villages near the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman. This attack has left several individuals dead and wounded, escalating the already heightened tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
Authorities in Ukraine reported the grim news late on Tuesday, revealing that at least three people have lost their lives in the aftermath of the Russian strike. Additionally, two others were wounded as a result of the attack on the villages near Lyman.
Pavlo Kyrylenko, who serves as the Head of Ukraine’s Donetsk region, used the messaging platform Telegram to share the somber information, stating, “Three people were killed and one wounded in Torkse, another civilian was wounded in Zakitne.”
The Donetsk prosecutor’s office provided further details, explaining that artillery strikes first targeted followed by an attack on Zakitne approximately half an hour later. The post on social media conveyed the tragic fate of those caught in the crossfire: “The people killed in Torske were two women and a man, aged 63 to 88, who were seated on a bench when shells hit.”
Amid the ongoing conflict, another incident occurred in the village of Seredyno-Buda, located in northeast Ukraine near the border with Russia. Shelling and the detonation of explosive drones resulted in the wounding of four individuals and damage to a residential building.
The situation escalated further due to the downing of two attack drones by Russian air defense forces, as confirmed by Moscow city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin. These incidents momentarily disrupted air traffic at several major Moscow airports, including Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, and Domodedovo. The flights were subsequently resumed after the situation was brought under control.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, the Russian defense ministry released a statement acknowledging that one of its Sukhoi Su-30sm fighter jets had destroyed a Ukrainian “reconnaissance boat” near Russian gas production facilities in the Black Sea. This revelation was followed by the announcement that the same jet had engaged and destroyed a US-made speedboat carrying Ukrainian troops east of Snake Island.
The recent series of events underscores the precarious state of affairs in the region, prompting concerns about the potential for further escalation between Russia and Ukraine. The tragic loss of lives and the intensification of hostilities highlight the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to address the growing crisis and prevent further bloodshed.
