On Saturday, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee provisionally suspended Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), for 90 days amid rage after he grabbed Jenni Hermoso’s head and kissed her on the lips after the Spanish team won at the Women’s World Cup.
On Friday, the head of RFEF was expected to resign but he denied it and said that he would not quit. The RFEF took legal action to support him after Hermoso said she did not agree to the kiss.
FIFA said in a statement that the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee… has decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international levels.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee also called Rubiales and the officials of RFEF and employees alike to withhold from reaching or trying to contact Hermoso or those close to her.
Spanish winning team decided to not take part in any while Rubiales stayed head of the federation.
“The judgment assumed by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has been spoken today to Mr Luis Rubiales, the RFEF and (European soccer body) UEFA for expected compliance.”
FIFA would not give any additional details on the disciplinary proceedings until a conclusive judgment was taken, the committee said.
There was no response from the RFEF. Reuters has called UEFA, where Rubiales is a vice president, for a statement.
