Selena Gomez’s Latest Music Video Pays Tribute to “Sex and the City” Breakup

Selena Gomez’s new music video for her song “Single Soon” is making waves not only for its catchy tune but also for a clever reference to the iconic breakup scene from the popular TV show “Sex and the City.”

Released on Friday, the music video captures Gomez in the process of getting ready for a night out. However, what caught fans’ attention was a subtle nod to the unforgettable Post-it breakup moment from “Sex and the City.” Just before heading out to meet her friends, Gomez’s character leaves a Post-it note attached to an Xbox controller. The note reads, “I’m sorry, I can’t, don’t hate me.”

This particular scene is reminiscent of a pivotal breakup moment in “Sex and the City.” In the show’s final season, the character Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, experiences an unexpected and abrupt breakup. Her boyfriend ends the relationship by leaving a Post-it note with the exact same phrase: “I’m sorry, I can’t, don’t hate me.”

While Gomez’s music video playfully references this pop culture touchstone, she also delved into her personal experiences with romance in a recent interview. She revealed that her hit song “Lose You to Love Me” was inspired by a past relationship that continued to haunt her. The track was a reflection of a difficult breakup that many found hard to let go of.

Gomez’s album “Rare,” released in 2020, was filled with heartfelt breakup songs that resonated deeply with listeners, including fellow artist Taylor Swift, who reportedly shed tears over some of the tracks. In earlier interviews, Gomez lightheartedly mentioned that her ex-partners often view her as “crazy” and express skepticism about the possibility of marriage in her future.

As Gomez’s music video offers a nod to a memorable breakup moment in television history, it also underscores the relatability of heartache and growth in her music, resonating with fans on a personal level.
