The intrigue surrounding the popular TV series “Suits” has taken an unexpected turn with revelations from creator Aaron Korsh about the royal family’s involvement in shaping Meghan Markle’s character on the hit show.
In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Korsh unveiled a surprising facet of the show’s history—Buckingham Palace’s creative influence on the series, which began even before Meghan Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry was widely known.
Korsh shared insights from behind the scenes, stating, “I think Harry put this in the book, ‘Spare,’ because I heard people talking about it that the royal family weighed in on some stuff.”
Delving deeper into the royal family’s feedback, Korsh revealed, “Not many things, by the way, but a few things that we wanted to do and couldn’t do, and it was a little irritating.”
An unexpected point of contention arose from the usage of a British colloquial term, “poppycock,” which sparked concerns within Prince Harry’s family. They expressed reservations about the term and expressed their preference for Meghan Markle’s character, Rachel Zane, not to use it on the show.
Korsh recounted, “My wife’s family, when they have a topic to discuss that might be sensitive, they use the word ‘poppycock’.”
This feedback led to alterations in an episode where Rachel was initially scripted to utter the term in a conversation with her partner. “We were going to have her say, ‘My family would say poppycock.’ And the royal family did not want her to say the word,” Korsh shared candidly.
In the midst of this revelation, Korsh expressed his disappointment with the decision. The term was eventually replaced with “bullshit,” a change that he was dissatisfied with due to his prior communication with his in-laws about the original inclusion of “poppycock” in the script. Although there may have been a few more instances of feedback, Korsh’s recollection of the details is not exhaustive.
As for the process of receiving feedback from the royal family, Korsh admitted that he was aware of their engagement with the scripts, but the specifics of how they obtained them remain somewhat hazy.
This revelation provides a fascinating glimpse into the collaborative dynamics between the creative minds behind “Suits” and the royal family, adding an unexpected layer to Meghan Markle’s journey from acting to her role as a member of the British monarchy.
