‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ Faces Criticism Amid Writers Guild of America (WGA) Strike

Amid the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, Drew Barrymore’s decision to continue with “The Drew Barrymore Show” has sparked controversy, leading to picketing outside the CBS studio by disgruntled writers.

One audience member, Dominic Turiczek, took to Twitter to share his experience, revealing that he had attended the show after winning tickets, unaware of the ongoing WGA strike. Turiczek and fellow audience members wore pins related to the strike upon entering the studio. However, they were promptly removed from the audience and subjected to verbal confrontation by Drew Barrymore’s crew. Turiczek expressed his belief that the show’s team did not support the #WGAStrong movement, writers, or their fans. In response to their removal, Turiczek and others decided to join the strike, marking their solidarity.

In a subsequent tweet, Turiczek questioned the disproportionate reaction, wondering why wearing a small button had triggered such a response from “The Drew Barrymore Show.”

Went to @DrewBarrymoreTV after winning tickets, unaware of the #WGA strike. We took pins & went in, got kicked out, & verbally assaulted by @DrewBarrymore’s crew. It’s clear they don’t support #WGAStrong, writers or fans! #DrewTheRightThing So we took shirts and joined. Fuck that pic.twitter.com/UuyCxAS491

Drew Barrymore initially suspended her daytime talk show in 2020 as a show of solidarity with the striking writers. However, she later made the decision to resume the show while asserting compliance with SAG-AFTRA and WGA rules. Barrymore took personal ownership of this choice and emphasized that the show would not discuss or promote any film or television productions involved in strikes. She further underscored that her show was designed to address sensitive issues and has always been attuned to real-world events, including the ongoing global pandemic.

“The Drew Barrymore Show” now finds itself at the center of a contentious debate as it navigates the delicate balance between continuing its programming and respecting the concerns of the striking writers.
