Diana, Princess of Wales, remains an enduring icon of style and individuality, known for her fashion choices that defied royal conventions. One of her iconic sweaters, featuring a sheep motif with a lone black sheep among white ones, has recently resurfaced and fetched a remarkable price at auction.
The red sweater, created by the Warm & Wonderful brand, made its first appearance on Diana at a polo match in 1981, just weeks before her wedding to Prince Charles. The unique pattern and symbolism of the black sheep garnered attention and admiration.
Sotheby’s New York included this historic sweater in its “Fashion Icons” event, running from September 7 to September 14, with an estimated value ranging between $50,000 and $80,000. However, the sweater exceeded expectations, receiving a top bid of $120,000.
Diana, often referred to as “the People’s Princess,” was beloved by the public for her approachable and unique persona within the royal family. Her fashion choices often conveyed messages and expressed her individuality, and this sweater was no exception.
Cynthia Houlton, Global Head of Fashion & Accessories at Sotheby’s, noted that Diana is remembered for who she was, her work, and her uniqueness, rather than just her appearance or clothing. The black sheep motif on the sweater symbolizes her distinctive position within the royal family and her ability to stand out in a crowd.
The discovery of the sweater in Joanna Osborne’s attic, one of its creators, added a new layer to Diana’s fashion legacy. It was initially sent for repair or replacement in 1981 after Diana’s aide noted her fondness for it. The broken sweater was eventually found and confirmed to be authentic due to a detached cuff.
Diana’s fashion choices were intentional and served as a means of self-expression. She rewore the replacement sweater to another polo match in 1983, emphasizing its personal significance to her. Diana’s conscious approach to fashion allowed her to communicate her identity and individuality, making her a timeless style icon.
