Rowling has once again stirred controversy with her views on gender, stating that she would willingly go to prison rather than submit to compelled speech regarding preferred pronouns if the government made them a hate crime. Rowling’s stance came in response to a tweet suggesting that voting for the Labour Party would result in a two-year prison sentence.
This response from the 58-year-old author came following reports that the Labour Party is planning to strengthen gender hate laws. Under the proposed policy, intentionally using incorrect pronouns to harm someone could be classified as a hate crime, carrying potential jail time.
The Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, is seeking to enhance anti-LGBT+ hate crime laws, with the goal of imposing longer sentences on offenders. According to Anneliese Dodds, Shadow Women and Equalities Secretary, the Conservative Party has fallen short in effectively protecting LGBT+ individuals from violent hate crimes.
This latest controversy adds to the ongoing debate surrounding J.K. Rowling’s views on gender and identity, which first garnered significant attention in 2020 when she criticized the use of the term “people who menstruate” in an op-ed.
