Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, stepped into her latest royal role with grace and distinction. On Wednesday, the 41-year-old royal made her inaugural visit as the Colonel-in-Chief of the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards (QDG), marking a significant moment in her ongoing royal journey.
This role, appointed over the summer by King Charles, is part of a trio of prestigious positions that the Princess of Wales now holds, including being the Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Coningsby.
The QDG, with its rich history, was formed in 1959 through the merger of the 1st King’s Dragoon Guards and the Queen’s Bays, specializing in reconnaissance— the art of understanding and seeking out the enemy. The regiment has a strong tradition of global deployments, with their most recent mission being part of a peacekeeping operation in Mali.
During her visit, Princess Kate received a comprehensive briefing from the regiment’s senior officers, offering her insights into the daily lives of the service personnel. She observed how teams communicate efficiently through the use of radios and learned about their use of reconnaissance drones.
The visit also included meetings with the families of QDG personnel, providing an opportunity to understand their experiences and the welfare support they receive. In addition, Princess Kate took a moment to commemorate and honor those who have lost their lives in active service, in anticipation of Remembrance Day.
The visit wasn’t just ceremonial; Princess Kate also presented awards, including long service and good conduct medals, to several deserving members of the regiment. An endearing highlight was her role in a special promotion, where she formally elevated the regiment’s mascot, Trooper Longface Emrys Jones, a Bay Welsh mountain pony, from “Lance Corporal” to “Corporal.”
This royal outing took place while her husband, Prince William, was concluding his visit to Singapore, which involved attending the third Earthshot Prize awards ceremony and addressing the United for Wildlife summit during his time in Asia.
Prince William explained that his wife, Princess Kate, couldn’t join him on this trip due to their eldest son, Prince George, being in the midst of his first set of major exams. As Kate continues to shine in her new royal role, her commitment to her family and her royal duties remains unwavering.
