In the vast expanse of space, personal grooming takes on a new dimension for astronauts. China’s Shenzhou 17 mission, led by Commander Tang Hongbo alongside crewmates Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xinlin, recently provided a glimpse into the intricacies of grooming tasks in space. From haircuts to hair washing, the astronauts showcase their unique methods in a video released by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).
In the absence of earthly barbers, Tang Shengjie takes on the role of hairstylist using a smart device with a built-in vacuum cleaner. The device, a familiar tool on the International Space Station, employs a cut-and-vacuum system to neatly remove hair without the risk of clogging space station hardware.
The footage also reveals Tang Hongbo’s method for washing his hair, a process that requires adaptation to microgravity. Using special shower caps, the astronaut applies shampoo from the first cap and utilizes the second cap, filled with water, to cleanse and rinse his hair. The efficiency of the process is completed with a thorough towel dry.
Since their arrival at Tiangong on October 26, the Shenzhou 17 crew has seamlessly integrated into their daily activities, which include moving equipment for experiments and maintaining science facilities. The video provides a rare insight into the routine tasks undertaken by astronauts during their extended stay in space.
Apart from their daily duties, the astronauts have captured breathtaking vistas from their unique orbital position. The Shenzhou 17 crew is expected to remain stationed in Tiangong for approximately six months, with the Tianzhou 7 cargo resupply mission scheduled to arrive in January.
The Shenzhou 17 astronauts not only exemplify the resilience required for space travel but also highlight the adaptability needed for routine tasks in the absence of gravity. As they navigate their daily responsibilities and showcase innovative grooming techniques, the crew provides a fascinating glimpse into the intricacies of life aboard the Tiangong space station.
