Years after the blockbuster success of “Twilight,” Kristen Stewart, the lead actress, is opening up about her perspective on the vampire movie, still considering it a “gay movie.” At 33, Stewart revisits her iconic role as Bella Swan, discovering queer undertones that were not initially apparent.

In a recent interview with Variety, Stewart shared her evolving perspective on the film, acknowledging the subtle queer elements present, even in the character of Bella Swan. “I can only see it now,” she expressed. “I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating. It’s such a gay movie.”

Stewart went on to highlight the hidden and unspoken aspects of the film, noting, “I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK.” Here, she refers to fellow stars Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson, emphasizing the unspoken dynamics among the cast.

Stewart delved into the origins of “Twilight,” noting that the book was written by a Mormon woman, Stephenie Meyer. The actress pointed out that the storyline is rooted in themes of oppression and a desire for what may ultimately be destructive. Stewart expressed admiration for what she described as a “very Gothic, gay inclination” present in Meyer’s work.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Meyer’s faith significantly influenced her writing. Business Insider notes that the 50-year-old author adhered to religious principles, abstaining from drugs, excessive drinking, gratuitous sex, and foul language.

Kristen Stewart’s candid reflections on “Twilight” provide a fresh perspective on the beloved vampire saga, shedding light on hidden dynamics and queer undertones that may not have been initially apparent to audiences. As the actress continues to revisit her past roles, her insights offer a nuanced understanding of the film’s cultural impact and the influence of its creators’ personal beliefs.
