Twitter’s head of trust and safety has resigned from the company

On Thursday, Ella Irwin, the head of trust and safety of the social media platform, Twitter, told Reuters that she has resigned from the company, which has encountered criticism for neglecting protections against dangerous content since Elon Musk bought the platform in October.

Irwin joined Twitter in June 2022 and took over as head of the trust and safety team in November when the previous head Yoel Roth quit. She oversaw content moderation.

An email to Twitter returned a robotic reply with a poop emoji. Irwin denied further comment and Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Irwin’s release comes as Twitter has struggled to keep advertisers, with brands cautious of appearing next to inappropriate content.

Musk revealed earlier this month that he has to leave his position as the CEO of Twitter and hired Linda Yaccarino, former NBCUniversal advertising chief, to become the social media giant new CEO.

Since Musk’s purchase the Twitter, the social media company has cut costs dramatically and released more than thousands of employees, including many who had worked on actions to stop harmful and illegal content, protect election integrity, and appear correct information on the site.

Musk has announced a feature called Community Notes, which lets users add context to tweets, as a way to fight deceptive information on Twitter.

The firm is also encountering increasing inspection from regulators over its moderation efforts.
