Ariana Grande recently cleared up a small yet notable confusion regarding the lyrics of the iconic Wicked song “Popular” after the official film account posted a teaser featuring her version of the song.
The teaser, which showcased Grande’s portrayal of Glinda and featured glimpses of the upcoming Wicked film, displayed the lyrics: “Popular, you’re gonna be popular / I’ll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys / Little ways to flirt and flounce, ooh!” However, fans quickly pointed out a discrepancy in the lyrics, which led the 31-year-old actress to step in and make a correction.
Taking to her social media, Grande commented on the video, writing, “It’s ‘ploys’ !!!!!! I love you @wickedmovie,” correcting the line to its original form: “I’ll teach you the proper ploys when you talk to boys.”
Grande’s correction aligns with the official Wicked sheet music, which was released by Hal Leonard Corporation for the Broadway musical. The original lyric, “ploys,” refers to the clever tricks or strategies Glinda uses to teach Elphaba how to navigate the world of popularity.
Fans were quick to appreciate Grande’s attention to detail as they eagerly await the release of the highly anticipated Wicked film. In the movie, Grande stars as Glinda, the bubbly and popular witch, alongside Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, the misunderstood green witch.
