Jeffrey Wright, known for his portrayal of Detective James Gordon in The Batman, recently opened up about his character’s absence from the upcoming spinoff series The Penguin.
In an interview with Inverse, Wright clarified that he was never slated to appear in the show’s debut season. “There was no talk of me being in this first season,” the actor explained.
However, Wright hinted that Gordon’s return to Gotham City might not be off the table. “Who knows? We’ll see what happens down the line, but I’m juggling enough balls as it is,” he said, leaving fans speculating about his potential involvement in future projects.
While HBO has not yet confirmed a second season for The Penguin, excitement around The Batman: Part II continues to build. Wright expressed his enthusiasm for reprising his role in the highly anticipated sequel, although he admitted to knowing very little about it. “I’m excited about getting back there, but you probably know as much as I know. I haven’t read anything,” the Emmy-winning actor shared.
Meanwhile, Colin Farrell, who stars as the titular character in The Penguin, hinted at the possibility of his character making an appearance in the next Batman film. Speaking on The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, Farrell said, “I have no idea what the second film is gonna be. I heard Penguin features in it. I haven’t read it… It’d be interesting to see where we pick up from. But he would be quite different.”
As fans eagerly await the next chapter in Gotham’s saga, they can mark their calendars for The Batman: Part II, set to release on October 2, 2026. Whether or not Wright’s Gordon or Farrell’s Penguin will play significant roles, the sequel promises to deliver more intrigue and action from director Matt Reeves’ reimagined Batman universe.
