Meghan Markle’s departure from the Royal Family in 2020 has sparked much discussion about her time as a senior royal. According to royal experts, Meghan may have struggled to understand her role within the family, as her expectations of royal life did not align with the reality of her position.
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond shared her thoughts with OK! magazine, explaining that Meghan seemed unaware of the limitations she would face as a member of the Royal Family. “I have always held the view that Meghan failed to understand that she would never be the top dog in the Royal Family… or even the deputy top dog,” Bond said. While acknowledging that it’s natural for people to desire control and attention, Bond believes that Meghan’s ambitions were better suited to a different platform than the Royal Family.
In a similar vein, royal expert Phil Dampier spoke with The Sun, suggesting that Meghan may have never fully intended to remain a part of the Royal Family. “To be honest, I don’t think she ever intended to stay in the Royal Family,” Dampier remarked. He noted that while Meghan appeared excited about the idea of a grand wedding, he believes her heart was never fully invested in royal life. “Unfortunately, I think she was prepared to have a wonderful wedding costing millions of pounds, but I don’t think her heart was ever really in it, and I think she always planned to leave,” he said. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and that’s what we’re seeing now.”
These insights suggest that Meghan’s decision to step away from royal duties was the result of a mismatch between her expectations and the reality of life in the Royal Family. Her ambitions for a more public and independent role appear to have clashed with the constraints of royal responsibilities, leading to her and Prince Harry’s ultimate decision to distance themselves from the institution.
