Grimes is speaking out about the devastation caused by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, which have displaced nearly 200,000 Californians, including herself. The 36-year-old musician, known for her advocacy on environmental issues, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, January 9, to share her concerns about the growing climate crisis and the state of humanity’s response.
The wildfires, which began on January 7 in Pacific Palisades, have rapidly spread across L.A. County, destroying thousands of homes and structures, with at least 10 confirmed deaths as of Thursday, according to CNN. Grimes, who was forced to evacuate her home earlier this week, described the crisis as “Biblical” and expressed her fears that society may be running out of time to address the environmental challenges before it’s too late.
“We might be outta time with regards to twiddling our thumbs whilst every level of our culture, environment, government, institutions, mental health, etc. have obviously crumbled,” Grimes wrote, echoing her long-standing concerns about climate change and the need for urgent action.
In a subsequent post, Grimes shared her personal experience of the evacuation: “Just had to evacuate, tried to go to a friend’s place / it got an evacuation warning on the way there — now aimlessly driving out of the city.” Her words offered a glimpse into the confusion and fear that many residents are experiencing in the wake of the wildfires.
Amid her reflections on the crisis, Grimes also addressed a commenter who criticized her ex-partner, Elon Musk. Despite their split in 2022, Grimes defended Musk’s efforts to combat climate change through his work in the electric vehicle industry, urging others to focus on truth-based discourse rather than engaging in divisive “dopamine rage bait” on social media.
“He’s pretty vocal about climate change and is primarily known for, in part, revolutionizing electric vehicles,” Grimes wrote. “The biggest challenge right now is not falling into creating and consuming dopamine rage bait on social media.”
Grimes and Musk share three children together, and despite their separation, they continue to maintain a connection through their family. As the wildfires ravage the region, Grimes remains vocal about the urgent need for societal and governmental action to combat climate change and prevent further environmental disasters.
The wildfires have brought environmental issues to the forefront, reminding citizens and leaders alike of the growing threat posed by climate change. As Grimes continues to advocate for climate awareness, her personal experience serves as a stark reminder of the real-world impacts of the ongoing crisis.
