Miley Cyrus Says 2013 Fame Damaged Her Family and Love Life: “I Lost Everything”

Miley Cyrus is opening up like never before about a turbulent period in her career that deeply impacted her personal life and family relationships.

During a candid conversation on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast, aired on June 10, the “Flowers” hitmaker looked back at the aftermath of her explosive 2013 fame, describing it as one of the hardest chapters of her life.

“That was the time where I just got hit so hard and I was so embarrassed,” shared the 32-year-old singer and actress, recalling the intense media scrutiny that surrounded her post-Hannah Montana transformation.

Cyrus revealed that the backlash she faced didn’t just affect her—it extended to her family as well. “There was a point when my brother and sister didn’t want to go to school because they felt humiliated to be related to me,” she said. One of her brothers even confided in her, saying, “I don’t judge you, but it’s hard going to school when you’re my sister.”

The Something Beautiful artist acknowledged that she was “a tough sibling to grow up with,” and admitted, “I lost everything in my personal life because of the professional choices I made.”

Miley also spoke about how her bold and unapologetic expression, especially her sexuality, made it difficult to maintain romantic relationships. “If I dressed a certain way or acted in ways that weren’t conventional, people would leave,” she said. “No one wanted to date me because the part of myself that most men wanted to be exclusive was already public.”

She reflected on how her openness and visibility clashed with the expectations of past partners. “When I was dating or even engaged, it didn’t work out because I was sharing parts of myself that others thought should only belong to them.”

Despite the emotional toll, Cyrus continues to embrace her journey. Her latest studio album, Something Beautiful, is now available and receiving praise for its raw honesty and musical evolution.
