The devastating accident occurred on Thursday when an Air India flight bound for London Gatwick tragically crashed, resulting in the deaths of 241 passengers. Among those onboard were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese passengers. Tragically, only one British passenger survived the incident.

Following the traditional military parade held at Horse Guards Parade, the Royal Family joined the nation in a moment of reflection. The poignant tribute included the playing of the Last Post, a minute’s silence, and the Reveille.

King Charles Orders Black Armbands for Uniformed Royals

As a personal mark of mourning, King Charles requested all uniformed members of the Royal Family to wear black armbands as a sign of respect for the lives lost and to support grieving families and communities affected by the tragedy. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirmed this decision to GB News, emphasizing the solemn nature of the occasion.

Meanwhile, senior royals in civilian attire—including Queen Camilla, Princess Kate, and her three children—did not wear armbands, in accordance with royal protocol. Similarly, other family members like the Duchess of Edinburgh, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and the Duchess of Gloucester also refrained from wearing armbands during the event.

King Charles Shares Heartfelt Message of Sympathy

In response to the tragedy, King Charles released a moving statement expressing his profound sorrow and support for the victims and their families.

“My wife and I have been desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning,” the monarch said. “Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones.”

Trooping the Colour Becomes a Moment of National Mourning

While the annual Trooping the Colour marks the official birthday of the monarch and is usually a vibrant and celebratory event, this year’s ceremony reflected a deep sense of national mourning. The Royal Family’s respectful tribute and King Charles’ heartfelt message brought the nation together in remembrance of those lost in the Air India disaster.
