In an in-depth interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 22-year-old star discussed the disconnect between her public image and her true self. When asked if people’s perceptions align with reality, Ortega was quick to respond,

“Not at all.”

She elaborated on this struggle, saying,

“It’s almost to a point where it feels like your name doesn’t belong to you. I almost don’t even resonate with it anymore.”

The Burden of Assumptions and Public Scrutiny

One of the most frustrating aspects of fame for Ortega is the constant barrage of assumptions made by the public.

“I hate assumptions, and a big part of this job is that people are going to make assumptions about you,” she admitted. Though she has learned to accept this reality, it remains difficult.

Director Tim Burton, who worked with Ortega on the film Wednesday, shared his own thoughts on modern celebrity culture, lamenting the loss of mystery surrounding actors. Ortega agreed, adding,

“We know too much. And the people feel entitled to those bits and pieces of your life where if they were put under the same microscope, they wouldn’t feel nearly as comfortable.”

The Reality of Being Recognized

Contrary to popular belief, Ortega explained that being recognized is not always constant.

“Sometimes you go out, and it’s a mess. And other times, I could be walking for hours and no one gives a s—. If you really want to go unseen, you can do it.”

However, when she is spotted, the experience can be overwhelming and, at times, frightening.

“Somebody shouting your name in public is insane,” she said. “Sometimes I feel uncomfortable when it’s grown men approaching me.”

More troubling are encounters where fan behavior crosses a line. Ortega shared a distressing experience:

“Sometimes people shout vile things. Like, you don’t stop for somebody because you’re going to be late for something and they’re calling you a ‘c— w—-’ in front of your mother. It’s horrific.”

A Glimpse Behind the Glamour

Ortega’s honesty offers a raw perspective on the emotional toll of celebrity life, contrasting with the glamorous image often portrayed in media. Her reflections remind fans that behind the fame and success lies a human being navigating complex and sometimes painful experiences.
