Pete Davidson Returns to Stand-Up Comedy Sober: “I’m Sharper and More Aware”

Comedian and actor Pete Davidson is gearing up for a fresh chapter in his life, both personally and professionally. After stepping back from the spotlight, the former Saturday Night Live star is returning to the stage — and this time, he’s doing it sober.

In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 31-year-old opened up about what it feels like to perform stand-up comedy after gaining sobriety. Davidson, who has faced challenges with PTSD and personality disorder, admitted he was nervous about whether he’d still be funny without the influence of substances.

“I was nervous because I thought, ‘Maybe I’m not good — maybe I was just so high, I thought I was funny,’” Davidson confessed. “But I’m weirdly sharper and more aware now, so it’s more fun.”

Davidson explained that being sober allows him to actually feel the audience’s reactions — a major shift from his previous experiences on stage.

“When people laugh, you really feel it, instead of just sitting there… so high,” the King of Staten Island star said.

The comedian’s candid remarks come at a transformative time in his life. Davidson is preparing to become a father with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, and the upcoming arrival of their baby has reportedly given him renewed focus and purpose.

Davidson previously sought treatment in 2023 for mental health issues, including a personality disorder diagnosis and PTSD. In 2024, he checked into a wellness facility to continue prioritizing his health.

Now, as he prepares for his stand-up comeback and new role as a dad, Davidson seems optimistic and grounded. His fans can expect not only laughs but also a more thoughtful, self-aware version of the comic they’ve come to love.
