Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton, is widely regarded as one of Johnny Depp’s most iconic roles. The 1990 fantasy film cemented Depp’s status as a Hollywood legend, but what many fans don’t know is that he was not the first actor considered for the role of the enigmatic, scissor-handed character.
Gary Oldman Almost Played Edward
Before Depp was cast, Gary Oldman, famed for roles in The Dark Knight and The Darkest Hour, was initially offered the part. In interviews, the 67-year-old actor revealed that he did not understand the script at the time and ultimately turned it down.
“It was a small list. My agent thought I had a really good chance of getting it. They said to me, ‘Read the script.’ I basically said, ‘I don’t get it,’” Oldman shared.

He further explained: “You have to remember at this point in time you’re not looking at Tim Burton’s whole body of work. I read this quirky, strange little script, and I didn’t get it. The Avon lady and the kid with the scissor hands. It just didn’t register with me. I said to the agent, ‘I just don’t understand this. It’s not my cup of tea.’”
Other Big Names Considered
Oldman was not the only Hollywood star linked to the role. According to reports, other major actors—including Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, and John Cusack—were also considered before Depp ultimately made the character his own.
The film, released in 1990, became an instant classic, known for its unique blend of dark fantasy, romance, and quirky storytelling—elements that would become hallmarks of Tim Burton’s style.
