Daniel Radcliffe has opened up about his personal journey, sharing candid reflections on mental health, fatherhood, and the transformative power of his latest Broadway play. Speaking during a post-show panel for Every Brilliant Thing, the Harry Potter star revealed that his younger self would hardly recognize the man he has become today.
Reflecting on the Past
Radcliffe spoke honestly about his struggles with unhappiness in his youth. “There have been times in my life when I have been deeply unhappy, particularly when I was much younger,” he said.
Contrasting that with his present life, he shared a heartwarming moment with his son: “I spent today with my 3-year-old son walking along the street, with him just holding my hand and being gorgeous and fun and silly — and I’m so happy. If you showed them to me when I was 20, I would not have recognized myself.”
The Impact of Every Brilliant Thing
The play, which centers around depression and mental health, has left a profound impression on Radcliffe. He described it as “the most profound, meaningful” work he has ever done, emphasizing its power to connect audiences with stories of hope and resilience.
“There is such potential for profound happiness in the future, even if it’s not where you are right now. It’s always worth giving the future a chance to prove you wrong,” he said.

Radcliffe also highlighted the rare opportunity performers have to witness the kindness and brilliance of audiences: “The chance to connect with people about [mental health] is really rare. As a performer in this show, you get such an amazing view of how brilliant and kind people can be.”
From Harry Potter to Broadway
Daniel Radcliffe began his acting career at the age of ten, appearing in the two-part adaptation of David Copperfield in 1999. He rose to worldwide fame portraying Harry Potter in the beloved Harry Potter franchise, and has since diversified his career with theater, film, and advocacy work, including mental health awareness.
Through his work on Broadway and his personal experiences, Radcliffe continues to inspire fans by sharing both his struggles and his triumphs, offering hope and authenticity to audiences worldwide.
