Prince Harry reportedly hoped to maintain a connection with the British Royal Family even after stepping back from his senior duties, but a new biography reveals that option was never on the table.
According to historian Hugo Vickers in his book Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, the Duke of Sussex suggested a “half-in, half-out” arrangement during discussions with royal officials in early 2020.
The proposal would have allowed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to become financially independent while still carrying out selected royal duties. However, the idea was rejected, with palace officials insisting on a clear decision—remain fully committed or step away entirely.
No Middle Ground for Prince Harry
During the talks that led to the couple’s royal exit, Harry was told the arrangement was not possible. The choice was described as “all in or all out,” leaving no room for compromise.
As revealed in the book, Harry ultimately left the UK and returned to Canada “reluctantly,” suggesting the outcome was not what he had initially hoped for.
Family Ties Still Matter
Despite the separation, there are signs that Harry may still want to rebuild family connections. Reports earlier this year indicated that he is considering bringing his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to the UK.

The potential visit could allow them to meet their grandfather, King Charles III, in person—something that has rarely happened since the family relocated abroad.
Sources suggest that any such visit would depend heavily on how the situation is handled, particularly in terms of how Meghan is received.
A Complex Royal Exit
Since stepping back, Harry and Meghan have built a new life focused on independence, media projects, and family. However, the Duke’s reported attempt to remain partially involved with royal duties highlights the difficulty of balancing personal freedom with royal responsibility.
While his proposed arrangement was denied, ongoing reports of potential visits suggest that the possibility of reconciliation may still exist—though it remains uncertain.
Prince Harry’s story continues to reflect the challenges of navigating life between tradition and independence, keeping global attention firmly on the Royal Family.
