James Gunn has shared a candid update about the status of The Authority, confirming that the highly anticipated project has been quietly put on hold.
Why ‘The Authority’ Was Delayed
Taking to social media platform Threads, Gunn revealed that the decision came down to both creative and strategic concerns.
According to him, the script “wasn’t quite there,” but more importantly, the story didn’t align well with the broader vision of the new DC Universe (DCU).

He also pointed to practical considerations, suggesting that the film didn’t currently fit into the evolving structure of the franchise.
Not Cancelled—Just Not Happening Soon
Despite the delay, Gunn clarified that The Authority has not been scrapped entirely.
“Maybe someday. Not soon,” he noted, leaving the door open for a potential revival in the future.
A Shift From Earlier Plans
The update marks a shift from Gunn’s earlier enthusiasm when the project was first announced in January 2023 as part of the DCU’s initial slate.
At the time, he described The Authority as a unique take on the superhero genre—focusing on morally complex characters who take extreme measures to “fix” the world.
DCU Moving Forward With Other Projects
While The Authority is on pause, development continues on other major DCU projects, including follow-ups to Superman, with Man of Tomorrow currently in progress.
A Strategic Rebuild of the DC Universe
Gunn’s decision reflects a broader effort to carefully shape the new DCU, ensuring that each project fits cohesively into the larger narrative.
For now, fans may have to wait longer to see The Authority on screen—but the evolving DC slate suggests there’s still plenty to look forward to.
