As Prince George approaches his next birthday on July 22, attention is once again turning to how Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales are navigating a growing challenge—balancing royal expectations with a “normal” childhood for their children.
Royal commentator Richard Palmer told The Mirror that the couple has remained firm in prioritising family life during their children’s early years. According to Palmer, Catherine has consistently placed her role as a mother above royal obligations.
“She has made it very clear that while her children are school age, they will be her priority,” he said, adding that she has resisted becoming consumed by the demands of royal life.
A careful balance between duty and family
While both parents are aligned in their approach, William’s position carries added weight as the future king. Despite this, he is said to share the same goal—shielding his children from the pressures he experienced growing up in the public eye.

Sources suggest William remains mindful of the scrutiny he faced during his own childhood and is determined to create a more grounded upbringing for his family.
“They are trying to protect their children from the intensity of royal life,” the report noted, while acknowledging the support system available to them within the monarchy.
Royal support system at play
Royal author Katie Nicholl highlighted what she described as a “hybrid” upbringing for the Wales children—one that blends tradition with everyday normality.

She pointed to the role of King Charles III as an engaged grandfather, particularly in guiding George as he grows into his future role.
According to Nicholl, the children benefit from both structured royal preparation and time away from formal duties, including relaxed moments with the Middleton family.
Preparing for the future
As Prince George edges closer to his teenage years, the balance between privacy and preparation is expected to become even more delicate.
For William and Catherine, the challenge remains ongoing: ensuring their children are ready for the responsibilities ahead—while preserving as much normalcy as possible in the present.
