President Joe Biden to Push for Domestic Manufacturing with Executive Order During Maine Visit

In a bid to strengthen domestic manufacturing and create more job opportunities for American workers, President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order during his first visit to Maine. The order calls on companies to prioritize manufacturing new inventions within the United States. As part of his visit, the president will deliver a significant speech at a textile factory and participate in a fundraising event in Freeport.

During the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden secured three out of four electoral votes in Maine. However, he aims to bolster his support in the state, which allocates its votes by congressional district. Demonstrating his commitment to blue-collar voters, President Biden sees the state’s single electoral vote as potentially influential in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre provided a glimpse of the trip, emphasizing the importance of bringing manufacturing back to the country and creating well-paying jobs. The president’s visit also includes the company of Democratic congressman Rep. Jared Golden, despite the latter’s previous criticisms of the administration’s handling of debt limit talks and student debt forgiveness.

Critics from the Republican party have raised concerns about Biden’s policies contributing to higher inflation, citing consumer prices reaching a four-decade high last summer. However, it is worth noting that inflation has since eased over the past year, currently hovering at a 3% annual rate.

The upcoming executive order, as reported by ABC News, seeks to enhance transparency in federal research and development programs geared towards domestic manufacturing.

The executive order mandates that agencies take into account national security and economic interests while broadening domestic manufacturing requirements. Moreover, federal agencies will receive encouragement to invest in domestic production and leverage their legal authority to foster the advancement of new technologies.

To address situations where goods cannot be feasibly produced in the US, the Commerce Department will implement a more streamlined and efficient waiver process.

During his Maine visit, President Biden will also focus on addressing China’s unfair trade practices concerning amorphous silica fabric (ASF) at Auburn Manufacturing Inc., a heat-resistant fabric maker. ASF plays a critical role in industries such as shipbuilding, oil refining, and electricity generation.

With the executive order’s primary focus on revitalizing domestic manufacturing and generating more well-paying jobs, President Biden seeks to bolster the US economy and enhance the nation’s resilience amid global challenges. The order aligns with the administration’s vision to rebuild America’s industrial might and foster sustainable economic growth for the benefit of all Americans.
