Threads: Meta’s New Text-Based Platform to Soon Support Direct Messaging

Meta’s latest venture, Threads, has sparked significant curiosity among users worldwide since its launch earlier this month. The application’s unique premise of allowing users to log in through their Instagram credentials raised expectations for a fresh way of sharing thoughts with the world.

As Twitter faced declining interest due to rate limits and substantial changes, Threads emerged as a potential alternative for those seeking a new platform. With the Elon Musk-owned platform now known as X, Threads presented an enticing option.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, confirmed in an interview with The Washington Post that Threads would soon incorporate direct messaging (DM) support, enabling users to privately communicate with one another.

However, Mosseri had earlier clarified that Threads was not intended to replace Twitter. Instead, the platform aimed to serve as a “public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter.”

The launch of Threads by Meta left users excited about the prospect of expressing thoughts while retaining the sense of community unique to Instagram’s ecosystem.

One of the most critical aspects of any social media platform is the ability to privately engage with others. Initially, users were surprised by the absence of DMs on Threads, but Mosseri’s confirmation indicates that this feature will be introduced soon.

In the interview, Mosseri discussed the team’s priorities for the new platform, emphasizing the importance of addressing essential issues promptly, including enabling in-app messaging.

Threads is also testing a Twitter-like feature for select users, categorizing their feeds into “Following” and “For You.” The “For You” view presents a mix of posts from followed profiles and recommended accounts, while the “Following” view displays posts exclusively from users one follows, arranged chronologically.
