On Wednesday, the Bank of Ireland express regret after resolving a technical issue that let customers withdraw or transfer more money than was in their accounts.
The tech glitch noticed large queues create at some cash machines on Tuesday and into the night, as the issue spread on social media, provoking police to be called in.
With no money in accounts, customers were able to withdraw up to 1,000 euros ($1,100), other reports said.
The Bank of Ireland warned customers that withdrawals and transfers, including those over usual limitations, would be debited from accounts, potentially listing them into costly overdrafts.
Overnight payments to accounts may emerge throughout the day. We sincerely apologize for the trouble this outage caused, it added.
The founder of the website (AskAboutMoney.com), Brendan Burgess told broadcaster RTE the bank required to enhance its “clunky” IT systems. If you withdrew 1,000 euros…then lined up outside the ATM to withdraw that money I don’t think you deserve any space at all, he added.
