Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group is gearing up to construct the world’s largest data center by capacity, targeting the surging global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) services. This ambitious project is set to position Reliance at the forefront of the AI-driven technological revolution.

Setting Up in Jamnagar with Cutting-Edge AI Technology

According to Bloomberg News, Reliance is acquiring advanced AI semiconductors from Nvidia Corp to power the state-of-the-art data center, which will be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The facility is expected to boast a massive capacity of three gigawatts (GW), significantly surpassing any existing data center worldwide.

For comparison, the largest data centers currently operating globally have capacities under one GW. Microsoft’s data center in Virginia, for instance, has a capacity of around 600 megawatts. Reliance’s Jamnagar hub will be several times larger, reshaping the global data center landscape.

A Green Energy-Powered Data Revolution

Reliance plans to power the Jamnagar facility with renewable energy, aligning with its sustainability goals. The group is simultaneously developing a sprawling green energy complex spread over 5,000 acres, which will include factories for photovoltaic panels, fuel cells, green hydrogen, wind turbines, and energy storage systems.

Accelerated Timelines for Completion

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd CEO Akash Ambani recently highlighted the company’s commitment to completing the data center within two years. “We want to complete it in true Jamnagar style in record time — as we have always done in Jamnagar — in 24 months,” he stated.

Boosting India’s Data Center Capacity

India’s current data center capacity stands at less than one GW. With this project, Reliance will not only multiply the country’s data-handling capabilities but also strengthen its position in the global AI ecosystem.

The Jamnagar facility will join an elite group of massive data hubs owned by global tech giants such as Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, which are investing billions in AI services.

Surging Global Demand for Data Centers

The demand for data center capacity is projected to triple by 2030, reaching an estimated 219 GW annually, according to McKinsey & Co. By spearheading this initiative, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group aims to secure a significant share of this rapidly expanding market, solidifying India’s role as a key player in the AI-powered future.

This groundbreaking project represents a milestone in the convergence of renewable energy, AI technology, and large-scale infrastructure, with Mukesh Ambani once again showcasing his vision for transforming India’s technological landscape.
