On Tuesday, Russia fined Reddit, the social media site, for the first time for not removing ‘banned content’ that Moscow said contained “fake” information about the military campaign of Russia in Ukraine, RIA reported, quoting a Moscow court.
Reddit joins a list of internet sites under inspection in Moscow for failing to delete ‘fake’ content that Russia considers unlawful, including Wikimedia, Google, and Twitch, the streaming service.
The court had fined Reddit 2 Million Rubles ($20,365), RIA said.
Since Moscow invaded Kyiv last year, Moscow has tensed control over coverage of the battle by bloggers and media, introducing harder punishments for “discrediting” the actions of its armed forces or publicizing wrong details about them.
