In a recent episode of “The Adam Buxton Podcast,” renowned actor Tom Hanks expressed optimism about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on the entertainment industry. While acknowledging concerns about the rapid advancement of AI, Hanks highlighted its transformative capabilities.

Hanks shared his fascination with the idea of recreating himself through AI technology, stating, “What is a bona fide possibility right now… I could get together and pitch a series of seven movies that would star me in them, in which I would be 32 years old from now until kingdom come.”

The acclaimed Hollywood actor further elaborated, explaining how anyone can now recreate themselves at any age using AI or deep fake technology. He emphasized that even if unforeseen circumstances were to prevent him from performing, his AI-generated performances could continue indefinitely.

Hanks acknowledged that AI-generated personas might lack his authentic acting style, but he questioned whether audiences would truly care. While some people may be able to discern the difference, he pondered if it would ultimately matter to them.

Drawing on his own experience, Hanks mentioned that the technology used to create an AI version of himself would be easier due to his likeness and movements being recorded for the 2004 movie “The Polar Express.” Similar technology was also employed in the latest Indiana Jones film, where Harrison Ford’s younger self was digitally recreated.

As the capabilities of AI continue to evolve, filmmakers and industry professionals are taking steps to protect actors’ likenesses as intellectual property. Hanks revealed ongoing discussions within guilds, agencies, and legal firms to establish the legal ramifications surrounding the use of actors’ faces and voices.

While promoting his first novel, “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece,” Hanks discussed his motivations for venturing into writing. He highlighted the need for fresh inspiration and acknowledged that the success of his novel would depend on its ability to captivate and engage audiences on its own merits.

As AI technology continues to progress, the entertainment industry stands at the precipice of a new era, where virtual performances and digital recreations could redefine the boundaries of storytelling. Tom Hanks’ optimistic perspective offers a glimpse into the potential of AI, sparking discussions about the ethical and creative implications it presents.
