On Sunday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, invited Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, to build a Tesla factory in Turkey, Anadolu Agency posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
During a meeting at Turkish House, a skyscraper near the United Nations in New York, Elon Musk was asked by Erdogan, Turkey’s state-owned news agency said.
Musk is also scheduled to meet Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, in California on Monday, The billionaire posted on X that their discussions would focus on artificial intelligence technology.
Turkish President Erdogan is in the United States to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In August, Tesla voiced an interest in creating a factory in India that would produce a low-cost electric vehicle (EV). Tesla currently has six factories and is making a seventh in Mexico in northern Nuevo Leon state, part of the electric carmaker’s push to grow its global footprint.
In May, Musk said that the automaker would likely select a location for a new factory by the end of this year.
On Saturday, Tesla shares are up 123 percent so far this year and the automaker said it had produced its 5 millionth car.
The Turkish embassy in Washington and Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
