Mattel, the renowned toy company, is making a big splash in the movie industry with plans to release at least 14 films tied to various toy properties. Some of the exciting projects include a “Polly Pocket” film directed by Lena Dunham and a “Barney” movie produced by Daniel Kaluuya.
While specific details about the other films remain under wraps, reports indicate that Mattel has an extensive slate of 45 films in development. One of the confirmed stars is Lily Collins, set to both star in and produce the “Polly Pocket” movie in collaboration with MGM. She had revealed her involvement in the project back in 2021.
The lineup of films is set to bring iconic toy properties to the big screen, with Warner Bros. Pictures and Mattel previously announcing a live-action “Hot Wheels” film produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, adding to the excitement. Additionally, Mattel Films has plans for a live-action “Barney” movie, co-produced by actor Daniel Kaluuya, with a promise to subvert audience expectations.
Mattel’s expansive film endeavors also include beloved toy properties such as American Girl, View Master, Masters of the Universe, Magic 8 Ball, and Uno.
The recent blockbuster success of “Barbie” serves as a significant milestone for Mattel Films, the company’s in-house film division launched by CEO Ynon Kreiz in 2018. By embracing its extensive collection of cherished toy brands, Mattel aims to become an “IP-driven machine,” captivating audiences with compelling stories on the big screen. With an exciting and diverse lineup of movies in the pipeline, Mattel is poised to make a lasting impact in the world of cinema.
