Ariana Grande is setting the record straight about her evolving voice, responding to recent criticism with confidence and clarity.
The 31-year-old pop icon, who recently celebrated the success of her role in Wicked, opened up about the topic during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett.
Addressing speculation about her vocal tone, Grande explained that altering her voice is a common technique among vocalists.
“The thing that I do that perplexes people so much—and it’s just so funny because if you’re a person who uses their voice, you know about this—is if I have a long day of press or if I have to sing, I’ll place [my voice] a little higher,” she shared.
The Side to Side singer further elaborated, saying, “I’ll change my vocal placement to kind of preserve. That is just something that’s healthy for the voice. It’s just basically pitching your voice up a tiny bit.”
Shutting Down the “Fake Voice” Accusations
Grande also addressed misconceptions that her voice changes aren’t natural.
“It’s just a normal thing for vocalists. But people are like, ‘That’s not her natural voice.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, it is actually, but it’s just a little higher. All of it is natural,’” she clarified.
Her remarks come after a previous conversation on Penn Badgley’s Podcrushed podcast in June 2024, where she unexpectedly shifted her voice mid-sentence, fueling further online discussion.
Despite the criticism, Ariana Grande remains unbothered, standing by her vocal choices as a necessary part of her craft and vocal health.
