Ben Affleck, the 52-year-old actor and filmmaker, is taking a strict approach to parenting, especially as his children grow into young adults. The star of Good Will Hunting and Gone Girl recently shared insights into his parenting style, emphasizing the importance of teaching his kids independence and the value of hard work.
Ben Affleck Turns Down Expensive Sneakers for Son Samuel
In a recent interview on the Today with Jenna & Friends podcast, Ben Affleck revealed a key parenting moment where he turned down his 13-year-old son Samuel’s request for a $6,000 pair of sneakers. Affleck jokingly explained, “He wanted these sneakers, and I was like, ‘These sneakers are $6,000, what are you talking about? Are you going to mow lawns? Do you have $6,000?’”
When Samuel responded, “We have the money,” Affleck humorously replied, “I have the money! You’re broke,” highlighting the difference between his financial situation and that of his son.
Teaching Kids to Earn What They Want
Affleck’s philosophy revolves around teaching his children the importance of earning what they desire, rather than relying on handouts. He said, “You love your kids. You want to give them everything and do everything for them, but you do them a disservice by not teaching them that you have to work for what you want.”

Instead of buying his son the pricey sneakers, Affleck explained, “Well, he’s got shoes, just no crazy expensive fancy shoes. And I’m like, ‘Well, if you want that, you can work 1,000 hours.’ You know, minimum wage. And once you work 1,000 hours, you might not want to spend it on a pair of sneakers.”
Violet and Seraphina Affleck Already Working
Ben Affleck also revealed that his two eldest children, Violet and Seraphina, have already begun working part-time jobs. According to Affleck, the teenage sisters are gaining real-world experience and learning important life lessons.
This hands-on approach to parenting reflects the actor’s belief that financial responsibility and the value of hard work are crucial life skills for his children to master.
