Director Andy Muschietti has shared exciting updates about the highly anticipated prequel series to It, titled Welcome to Derry. The Warner Bros. production, based on Stephen King’s iconic horror novel, is set to premiere in 2025 and will explore the eerie history of the fictional Maine town of Derry.
Muschietti revealed that the series is planned to span three seasons, with each delving deeper into the town’s dark and catastrophic past. The first season will take place in 1962, leading up to the events of It: Chapter One. The subsequent seasons will travel further back in time, with season two set in 1935 and season three in 1908.
Speaking to Radio TU, the 51-year-old director explained, “It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research.” These interludes detail Derry’s tragic history, including major events like the fire at the Black Spot, the Bradley Gang massacre in the 1930s, and the explosion at the Kitchener Ironworks.
Muschietti also explained the decision to structure the story in reverse chronological order, noting, “Every time [Pennywise] comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event that happens at the beginning of that cycle.”
Adding to fans’ excitement, Bill Skarsgård will reprise his chilling role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, promising to bring the terrifying character back to life in Welcome to Derry.
With its intricate timeline and rich backstory, the series is poised to delve deeper into Derry’s haunting origins and the malevolent force lurking beneath its surface. Fans of King’s novel and Muschietti’s It films can expect a thrilling and spine-chilling journey when the series debuts.
