BTS member Suga has embarked on his mandatory military service in South Korea, becoming the third member of the popular K-pop group to fulfill this national obligation.
In South Korea, it is a legal requirement for all physically fit men to serve in the military for a period of 18-21 months, whether in the army, navy, or air force. However, individuals with physical or mental health issues have the option to serve in alternative roles, such as in welfare centers, post offices, or community centers.
Suga, aged 30, has chosen to serve as a social service agent, a decision likely influenced by a shoulder surgery he underwent in 2020.
Before his departure, Suga took to the online fan platform Weverse to bid a heartfelt farewell to his fans, writing, “I’ll faithfully serve and come back… Please stay healthy, and let’s meet again in 2025!”
Big Hit Music, the agency that manages BTS, has requested that fans respect Suga’s privacy during his service and refrain from attempting to visit him at his workplace.
“Please convey your warm regards and encouragement silently in your hearts only,” Big Hit Music urged. “We ask for your continued love and support for (Suga) until he completes his service and returns.”
Meanwhile, Suga’s bandmates J-Hope and Jin are already fulfilling their military duties at army bases in South Korea. The group’s fans, known as the “ARMY,” continue to support and eagerly await the return of each member as they complete their military service obligations.
