Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has paid his respects to the late actor Matthew Perry, who tragically passed away at the age of 54 in what appears to be a drowning incident on a fateful Saturday. The world has been mourning the loss of the beloved “Friends” star, and Trudeau took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his condolences, describing Perry’s death as “shocking and saddening.”

Matthew Perry’s passing is shocking and saddening. I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them. Thanks for all the laughs, Matthew. You were loved – and you will be missed.

Trudeau’s message was deeply personal, as he recalled the fond memories of their childhood friendship, with a touching tribute to the impact Perry had on people worldwide. “I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them. Thanks for all the laughs, Matthew. You were loved — and you will be missed.”

The connection between Perry and Trudeau goes back to their formative years. Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, had a prominent role as the press secretary to Justin Trudeau’s father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. In a humorous twist, Perry shared a playful childhood memory during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live in March 2017. He revealed that he and a friend had once “beaten up” the future Prime Minister when they were in the fifth grade. Perry clarified that their motive was rooted in youthful jealousy, stating, “I think he was excelling in a sport that we weren’t, so it was pure jealousy.” Perry, ever the comedian, went on to jest that he might have played a part in inspiring Trudeau to reach the pinnacle of Canadian politics, quipping, “I think I was rather instrumental in him going to such great heights in becoming the Prime Minister. I think he said, ‘I’m going to rise above this and become Prime Minister.'”

I've been giving it some thought, and you know what, who hasn't wanted to punch Chandler? How about a rematch @MatthewPerry?

— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) April 1, 2017

In a playful and good-natured response, Trudeau demonstrated his sense of humor about the childhood incident by proposing a friendly rematch, tweeting, “I’ve been giving it some thought, and you know what, who hasn’t wanted to punch Chandler? How about a rematch @MatthewPerry?”

Matthew Perry, best known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing on the hit television series “Friends,” was found dead at a residence in the Los Angeles area, as reported by TMZ, citing law enforcement sources. While the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed responding to a call regarding the death of a male in his 50s at Perry’s address, they did not officially confirm the identity of the deceased. TMZ’s sources indicated that no foul play was involved, and first-responders were summoned to the residence due to a reported cardiac arrest.

Matthew Perry’s untimely passing has left a profound impact on fans and friends alike, with tributes pouring in from across the world. The warmth and humor of his friend Justin Trudeau’s tribute remind us of the joy Perry brought to people’s lives and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
