Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, the longtime best friends, weren’t seated side by side at tonight’s MTV VMAs, nor did they pose together on the red carpet. But a little bit of space didn’t prevent them from demonstrating just how deep their friendship goes.
Both stars were each other’s biggest fans when they stepped onto the stage to receive VMAs throughout the night. Gomez and Rema won for Best Afrobeats Video for their collaboration “Calm Down.” When Gomez was invited by Rema to deliver her short acceptance speech, Swift enthusiastically cheered for her.
Swift also seemed to call the people sitting around her to stand.
Earlier in the night, Gomez was caught standing during the acceptance speech of Swift for Best Pop Video, her first win of the night, proof that the support goes both ways.
Gomez and Swift were also snapped together during the ceremony, chatting and hugging. The sequel of pictures is very pretty—and marks the most public look at their friendship fans have brought in a while.
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift first became friends in 2008 when they were both dating, Gomez was with Nick while Swift was with Joe, the Jonas Brothers.
In 2017, Gomez recalled that origin story, disclosing to KIIS FM UK that she and Swift met because “we dated the Jonas Brothers together! It was hysterical. It was great because she was the girl with the big curly hair and all the bracelets and the cowboy boots. And I was up-and-coming, and we just connected. It was the best thing we got out of our former relationships.”
