Bella Hadid was spotted wearing a vintage Keffiyeh dress in Cannes in an obvious homage to her Palestinian heritage.
The Palestinian-Dutch model was photographed walking the streets of Cannes in search of ice cream in a red and white midi-dress with Keffiyeh patterns.
The dress was designed by the duo Michael and Hushi in February 2001, Bella Hadid shared in an Instagram story.
“Free Palestine Forever,” the supermodel added in the post.
The Keffiyeh is a traditional Middle Eastern scarf that has increasingly become associated with the Palestinian cause after the late political leader Yasser Arafat adopted it in the 1960s.
The patterns on the scarf have important ties to the Palestinian culture: the fishnet nods to the Mediterranean Sea, the thick border lines represent trade routes, and the wavy lines signify olive leaves which are considered to be a symbol of resilience and strength.
While it was traditionally worn by men, the scarf has off-late become a unisex, cross-cultural symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian community.
Australian actress Cate Blanchett also seemingly paid tribute to Palestine during the 77th edition of the film festival when she donned a gown that had the colors of the Palestinian flag.
Blanchett wore a tight-fitted black dress with a white and green colored hem. As she walked across the carpet, the actress would lift the hem of the dress which, against the red carpet, appeared to be a tribute to the Palestinian flag.
