Harry Styles was recognized and celebrated at the Ivor Awards, an annual event honoring songwriters and screen composers. The prestigious ceremony took place in London on Thursday, where other notable winners included Charli XCX, Raye, and the indie rock duo Wet Leg. Music legend Sting was also bestowed with a fellowship for his remarkable contributions.
Sting, renowned for his work as the writer and singer of “Every Breath You Take” and his successful career with The Police and as a solo artist, received the highest honor from the UK-based association for music writers, the Ivors Academy fellowship. This esteemed title makes him the Academy’s 23rd Fellow, joining the ranks of iconic figures such as Elton John, Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Expressing his gratitude, Sting mentioned that a few years ago, he received a lifetime achievement award, which he deemed somewhat premature. Therefore, obtaining the fellowship felt even more significant to him. He humorously compared the distinction to something out of “Lord of the Rings” but acknowledged the attached responsibilities. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights of songwriters, not only established ones like himself but also aspiring young talents.
Wet Leg, comprising Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, was honored as the songwriter of the year for their self-titled debut album, which reached the top of the charts. Raye’s “Escapism” won the award for best contemporary song. The music collective Sault’s “11” was recognized as the best album, while Florence + the Machine’s “King” secured the accolade for best song musically and lyrically.
Harry Styles achieved success in the most-performed work category with his mega-hit “As It Was.” Additionally, the rock band James was presented with the music icon award. Among the other winners were Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, who received the special international award, and Victoria Canal, the fourth consecutive female songwriter to claim victory in the rising star category since its inception in 2020.
The Ivor Awards, named after Ivor Novello, the esteemed Welsh composer, actor, and entertainer from the early 20th century, were established in 1956 and have since become prestigious in the music industry.
