Jeremy Renner talks about his snowplow accident for the first time in an upcoming TV interview with Diane Sawyer. The American actor, known for his roles in The Hurt Locker and The Avengers franchise, opens up about his harrowing experience in an ABC News special titled “Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph.”
The episode is set to air in April, prior to the world premiere of Renner’s new Disney+ series, Rennervations. In the interview, Renner recounts the day when he was crushed by a snowplow, causing him to suffer from multiple injuries.
“I see him in a pool of blood coming from his head,” Renner’s nephew tells Sawyer in the ABC News special. “I ran up to him. I didn’t think he was alive.”
The actor sustained eight broken ribs in 14 places, a collapsed lung, and multiple orthopedic injuries. He was hospitalized for blunt chest trauma and was lucky to survive the accident that took place in January.
Renner was attempting to save his nephew from the snow when the snowplow, which weighs at least 14,330 pounds, crushed him. “All of it,” Renner told Sawyer when she asked how much of the pain he remembers. “I was awake through every moment.”
The teaser from Renner’s interview also includes the shocking 911 call made to save his life, where the actor is heard moaning in pain as people tell him to “keep fighting”. Sawyer then reads off a long list of Renner’s injuries, which include a broken right knee, right ankle, left leg tibia, and left ankle, as well as a broken right clavicle and right shoulder. The actor also suffered from multiple facial fractures, including his eye socket, jaw, and mandible.
Despite the extensive injuries, Renner has chosen to focus on the positive aspects of his experience. “I chose to survive. That’s not gonna kill me, no way,” he said. “I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience, but I’ve been refueled and refilled with love and titanium.”
The teaser also shows the actor’s physical therapy, including him using a knee scooter to move around. When Sawyer asks him whether he sees a new face when he looks in the mirror, Renner responds with “No, I see a lucky man.”
Renner’s new Disney+ series, Rennervations, will begin streaming on April 12, 2023, and the actor will appear in person at the world premiere, following his first TV interview. He will also take part in a Q&A after a screening, giving fans the opportunity to ask him questions about his experience and his upcoming series.
