Shakira started a new debate on social media after calling the blockbuster film Barbie ’emasculating.’
For the unversed, the Colombian singer recently reviewed Margot Robbie’s starred movie, revealing that her sons Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, hated the trendsetter film.
During an interview with Allure, the Waka Waka singer confessed, “My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent.”
Shakira added, “I’m raising two boys. I want ‘em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women.”
The musician showered praise on the pop culture as it provides a platform where one can empower women without belittling men.
She shared, “I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.”
Shakira believes men and women have different purposes in society. She continued, “We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”
As the Hips Don’t Lie singer’s comments went viral online, some of Shakira’s fans defended whereas others called her remarks distasteful.
One fan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Shakira nailed the Barbie movie. She’ll probably now face pressure to apologize for this but she shouldn’t. Civilizations die when you emasculate men.”
Another fan chimed in, “Women don’t owe femininity to anyone, not even themselves… what an awful take. disappointing.”
“Out of all the awful Barbie takes Shakira being the worst one was not something I ever imagined,” one fan said.
