Sophia Loren hospitalized after suffering a fall at her home in Switzerland as her representative confirmed on Monday that the incident occurred on Sunday in the bathroom of her actress’ home in Geneva and that she suffered a few fractures, including to her femur and hip.
Her representatives added that they are hopeful about Loren’s recovery after her surgery.
News of the actress’s fall was also posted on the Instagram page for her restaurant chain on Sunday.
Following English translation, the post read as, “A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures. Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation.”
The Italian star was scheduled to open a restaurant in the Italian city of Bari on September 26, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet added that Loren was also set to accept honorary citizenship from Bari, but her engagements for the foreseeable future have been canceled.
Loren’s sons Carlo Jr., 54, and Edoardo, 50, have been by their mother’s side at the hospital, the publication also reported.
Sophia Loren, known as one of the most iconic actresses of the 20th century, last starred in the Italian drama film The Life Ahead, which was directed by her son Edoardo. She also worked in the documentary film “What Would Sophia Loren Do?” in 2021.
The actress’ last public appearance was at the Armani fashion show during the 80th Venice Film Festival on September 2, according to THR.
