Chris Evans is opening up about his emotional departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, years after hanging up his shield as Captain America. The beloved actor, who portrayed the iconic superhero across eight blockbuster films, officially stepped away from the role following Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Evans’ journey as Steve Rogers concluded with a heartfelt twist—after returning the Infinity Stones to their rightful timelines, the character chose to remain in the past and live out his days with his longtime love, Peggy Carter. In a symbolic passing of the torch, he handed his shield to Sam Wilson, now played by Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant to promote his upcoming film The Materialists, Evans was asked if he still keeps in touch with his Marvel co-stars, especially since he isn’t part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

“Yeah, I talk to them all the time. It’s where Pedro [Pascal] is right now,” he shared, hinting at the continuing camaraderie among the cast.
Evans admitted that stepping away wasn’t easy. “It’s sad to be away,” he said. “It’s sad to not be back with the band. I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out, and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.”
While Evans is taking a step back from the superhero spotlight, some of his fellow Avengers are making their return. Chris Hemsworth is set to reprise his role as Thor, and Robert Downey Jr. is making a dramatic comeback—this time as the villainous Doctor Doom.
The highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday will also feature familiar faces like Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Letitia Wright (Shuri), and of course, Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America.
Originally slated for a May 2026 premiere, Avengers: Doomsday will now hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, has been rescheduled to release on December 17, 2027.
As Marvel’s cinematic universe continues to evolve, fans still hold a deep appreciation for Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America—a legacy that, while complete, remains unforgettable.
