Dakota Johnson is preparing to step behind the camera for the first time with her feature film directorial debut, a deeply personal project written by autistic actress and writer Vanessa Burghardt.
The announcement came during a press roundtable at the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where Johnson spoke passionately about the upcoming film, her connection to Burghardt, and her desire to foster a respectful and inclusive filmmaking environment.

From Co-Stars to Collaborators
Johnson and Burghardt first worked together on the acclaimed indie film Cha Cha Real Smooth, in which Burghardt portrayed Johnson’s on-screen daughter. Reflecting on their experience, Johnson described Burghardt as “incredible” and shared that the upcoming film will be produced under TeaTime Pictures, the production company Johnson co-founded.
“I’ve always felt that I’m not ready to direct a feature. I don’t have the confidence. But with her, I feel very protective, and I know her very well… I just won’t let anybody else do it,” Johnson said of her decision to direct.
A Story That Centers Women and Empathy
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Johnson confirmed the project will be small, intimate, and focused on female-centered storytelling, something she is passionate about continuing throughout her career. Known for her bold roles in films like Fifty Shades of Grey, Black Mass, and Suspiria, Johnson says she is eager to amplify stories with emotional depth and meaning.
“I want to tell stories that focus on women and people who haven’t been heard. That’s the kind of work that fulfills me creatively,” she explained.
Promoting Kindness Over Chaos
In her candid remarks, Johnson also made a strong statement about the kind of filmmaking environment she wants to cultivate.
“I don’t want to be on toxic sets. I only want to work in kind, respectful environments,” she said, hinting at a broader movement in Hollywood for more compassionate and safe creative spaces.
Not Her First Time Behind the Camera
Though this will be her first full-length feature, Dakota Johnson is no stranger to directing. She previously helmed the music video for Coldplay’s “Cry Cry Cry” and a short film titled Loser Baby, demonstrating her evolving talent as a filmmaker.
Her move into feature direction signals a natural progression for the multi-hyphenate star, who continues to explore new avenues of creative expression.
A New Chapter for Dakota Johnson and Vanessa Burghardt
With a deeply personal script, a history of creative chemistry, and a shared vision of thoughtful storytelling, Dakota Johnson and Vanessa Burghardt’s upcoming film promises to be both emotionally resonant and culturally significant. As Johnson prepares to direct her first feature, fans and industry watchers alike are eager to see what this unique collaboration will bring to the screen.
