In a refreshingly candid interview, former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he, like many celebrities, has indulged in a little ego-surfing on the internet by Googling himself. The admission came during a light-hearted interrogation on Variety Fair’s popular lie detector show, where Radcliffe, alongside his Merrily We Roll Along co-stars Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, answered a series of probing questions.
When asked by a co-star if he ever Googled himself, Radcliffe responded with a simple, “Yes.” He didn’t shy away from the truth, and with a wink at the polygrapher, he quipped, “I mean, there’s no point in hiding, is there, Judd?”
The honesty didn’t stop there. Radcliffe, now 34, also acknowledged his curiosity about fanfiction related to his iconic Harry Potter character and the complex Draco Malfoy. “There’s quite a bit of fan fiction out there that pairs Harry and Draco Malfoy as characters in various storylines,” he revealed. “So, I’ve dabbled in reading some of that.”
The world of Harry Potter fanfiction is known for its creativity, with countless stories imagining new adventures and relationships for the beloved characters. Radcliffe didn’t hold back, sharing some of the oddest fan tales he’s come across: “What’s the oddest tale I’ve come across about myself? One where I supposedly had the UK Special Air Service walk my dogs. Another where I had a custom beer brewed for me by monks in a Belgian monastery.”
He added with a touch of humor, “And there’s even one that claims I used to have my assistant hold my scripts up to a mirror so I could read them while getting my makeup done. Although, that doesn’t make much sense because I wouldn’t be able to read mirror writing. The list goes on.”
Radcliffe’s openness in discussing his online habits and the peculiar world of fanfiction has endeared him even further to his fans. It’s a reminder that even celebrities can’t resist the occasional urge to peek into the online world where their personas have taken on a life of their own.
