David Schwimmer, famous for his role as Ross Geller on the beloved TV series Friends, recently revealed his surprising reaction to the show’s iconic theme song, “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts.
In an honest conversation on the Making a Scene podcast, the 58-year-old actor shared that, despite the song’s widespread popularity, there was a time when he simply couldn’t stand hearing it. He admitted, “I’ll be really honest – there was a time for quite a while that just hearing the theme song would really uggh.” Schwimmer explained that his frustration stemmed from hearing the song on constant repeat during the show’s production. The tune, which became synonymous with the series, eventually grated on him.

Schwimmer’s discomfort with the song grew during a period when he was struggling with the intense fame that came with Friends’ explosive success. He recalled how, as the show gained massive popularity, his life changed in ways he hadn’t anticipated.
“I remember the exact moment when my anonymity was over,” he said. “Jim Burroughs (the Friends director) took the cast to Vegas… this was before we were even on air. We were walking through a casino, and he said, ‘Remember this moment, it’s the last time you’re going to be able to walk through a casino like this.’”
For Schwimmer, this marked the moment when he transitioned from being an unknown actor to one of the most recognized faces in the world, as Friends became a global phenomenon.
Though the theme song will forever be tied to the show, Schwimmer’s candid reflections shed light on the challenges that came with the unexpected fame and constant reminders of Friends that followed him throughout his career.
