On the evening of September 1, a Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Atlanta to Barcelona faced an unexpected turn of events as it was compelled to make a U-turn mid-flight due to a passenger’s medical condition involving diarrhea.
The Airbus A350, initially scheduled to depart on time with 336 passengers on board, was forced to reverse course over central Virginia. The decision was prompted by what the DL 194 pilot described to air traffic control as a “biohazard issue” resulting from a passenger experiencing diarrhea throughout the aircraft.
The Airbus A350 touched down back at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport slightly more than two hours after its initial departure, as reported by FlightAware. Delta informed CNN that the flight was delayed for a little over eight hours but eventually reached its destination in Barcelona on Saturday at 5:16 p.m. local time without further incidents. A Delta spokesperson expressed apologies to passengers for the delay and the inconvenience caused to their travel plans, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to ensuring safety and swiftly resolving the situation.
This incident, while unusual, is not the only occurrence this summer where passengers have had their travel experiences disrupted by bodily fluids. In a separate incident on August 26, Air Canada issued an apology after two passengers were assigned to seats that had not been adequately cleaned and were previously soiled with vomit from a previous flight, affecting a journey between Las Vegas and Montreal.
Furthermore, on June 30, a passenger aboard an Air France flight traveling from Paris to Toronto encountered a seat footwell still damp with a previous passenger’s blood and diarrhea. The traveler, Habib Battah, reported an unpleasant odor resembling “manure” and, upon notifying a flight attendant, was provided with wet wipes to clean the area himself. Later, he was offered blankets from the business class section to address the issue. Despite the discomfort, passengers endured the situation for the duration of the flight, which lasted approximately seven hours.
